Fernando Castillo’s Carter Machine Sterling

A photo of Fernando Castillo’s Carter Machine Sterling.  I purchased this off Fernando, shop manager at Carter Machine in the early 90s, probably 10 years ago.  It came with rubber grips and I added the panels.  The barrel back is an Armson and the front is a piece of brass, drilled on the bottom to supposedly add back spin.
I added the pump handle, which is an early 90s custom pump from the UK.

Fernando wrote me when I purchased this sterling:
“Sterling barrel was made by me at Carter Machine. It is an Armson barrel with a brass front only ported at the bottom. I guess it could be considered the first attempt at a flatline barrel. My idea was to vent air down and put a backspin on the ball to make it go farther. I didn’t notice a difference and Earon said it sucked.”

I would guess this Sterling dates back to 1992 or 1993 and predates most of the other Carter Machine Sterlings I’ve seen.  It uses the WGP frame instead of the Sterling frame.
According to Lyle Kuchmak, of Quest for Adventure, Co2 Samurai, and Canadian Imported of the Sterling in the early 90s, the first Sterlings imported from the UK used the WGP frame.

  1. yep, the first batch of Sterlings i brought back to Paintball Checkpoint in summer of 1993 had WGP frames on them, so i can verify this.
