On January 24th, 2015 I visited SC Village for the UWL 2014 season championships. While there I talked with Joe Comstock, of Havok, Sudden Death and GBD about the field Joe and his business partner, Mike Weiner (sp?), ran in the mid to late 1980s, Tactics – Air Pistol Combat.
Tactics began was located in Southern California, in Hope Town, between Chatsworth and Simi Valley and later moved to Cheeseboro in Agoura Hills.
Joe and I originally met at the 2014 UWL Championships at SC Village. We talked for a while last year and even recorded some videos I haven’t edited yet. Those video will go more in depth on Joe’s history and cover playing with Havok, Jay “The Old Buzzard” Jackson, Youngblood’s nickname and more on Tactics.
This year I wanted to bring some relevant classic magazines and show them to Joe and see if he thought some of the media I dug up would go well with his longer videos.
After seeing the premiere issue of Action Pursuit Games, fall 1987, and finding a photo of himself and his business partner at Tactics, Comstock was so excited that I made him explain the media in a short video. Unfortunately, the articles surrounding the photos in the fall 1987 didn’t feature any written information so it was up to Joe to remember the details.

We also took a look at the advertisement that was printed in the July 1987 issue of Front Line Magazine. As Rick Cendejas (also playing on GBD with Joe Comstock for the UWL Championships) points out, there is no address on this ad, only a phone number?
Joe explains that the number was likely Mike Weiner’s (spelling?) number at the time. This ad could have either been printed in the midst of Tactics moving from Hope Town, between Simi Valley and Chatsworth, to Cheeseboro in Agora Hills. As Joe explains in the video, both locations were on Bob Hope’s property thanks to Mike Weiner working with Bob Hope’s property manager.
Joe goes on to explain Tactics’ walk on groups, the teams that played there and and his hand painted “Tactics” sign. Joe thinks the photos in APG could be from spring of 1987 and explains that the Hope Town location went for a year and a half and the Agora Hills location lasted another year. I would guess the dates would be beginning of 1986 until spring or summer of 1987 (around when the Front Line ad without an address ran). And the Agora Hills location would have existed from summer of 1987 until summer of 1988.
